I have been to Chennai for a past one year studying BCA and I must admit, I feel like being in a different country. I am respectful to all the religions, languages and provinces; but people here don't seem to understand the fact that Tamil is a regional language and until and unless I have to come to Tamil Nadu, I don't need to learn it, just like Bengali (I am a Bengali myself). I was harassed repeatedly by some people for not knowing Tamil. Now, don't they feel ashamed of not knowing our national language?

The autowallas are pathetic. The moment they realise I am not Tamil, they try to charge just the double.

I find it rather stupid that Hindi is hated by most of the people here to such a great extent.

But I also found some students and professors who helped me a lot. But most of the people so far who I have encountered have no idea that a world exists outside Tamil Nadu and that other languages are to be respected as well.

When you look at unfriendly behavior of Tamilians / Madrasis you must look at a lot of Historical Aspects as it affects today's Human Behavior. In general consider any Large / Diverse country, say for example USA, the North and South do not get along, with the North feeling the South is immensely underachieving / dragging National GDP / Income Averages down. BUT this View had purely originated a few years before their Civil War and it had a Lot to do with Racial Discrimination. Its natural that the Settlers down South in a Large country tend to have a Dark Complexion due to more intense weather conditions. This Dark Complexion triggers a sense of Racial Discrimination resulting in these Settlers usually excluded from more of the Development that takes place. It was no different in India. Being such an Old Country witnessing Large Number of Races / Cultures India has grown to be Multi Cultural.

But if you have noticed, during any Pre-British Colonization that took place here in India, be it the Aryan Invasion or the Mughal Domination, the Southern States have usually never been raided or annexed leaving them to their own development. It was at THIS point of time that South Indians felt a need to preserve and protect their Culture as unity was the Need of the Time to prevent Assimilation by Enemies. FACT. Added to this post independence India has been evolving Rapidly Excluding the Southern States, which makes it more insecure.

Your view of Madrasis and South Indians as unfriendly purely a reaction to your Racist views. If you see four Uneducated Guys in a Mall in Mumbai or Delhi or your Hometown staring at Women with skimpy clothes you would develop a Hatred towards those guys but if you see the same being done in Chennai, a Group of Four Uneducated (Black) Guys staring at a Women with Skimpy Clothes you would typecast this as Madrasi Attitude and say that we stare at women with Short Clothes. The same thing holds good for Women. Dont they know Men would Look at them If they wear Skimpy Clothes? Most of them wear it so that Men would look at them. But its okay for Guys in Mumbai n Delhi to be staring at you on the streets but a (Black) guy looks at you in Madras then you would not hear the End of it from her, She has a preference about whom can look or who cant and she cant expect it. Such a Racist view aggravated by the Clashes in Culture between the North and South has obviously set an Inferiority in the Madrasis and they defend themselves with Pride. I'm pretty sure if a Westerner insults your Home Town with derogatory Remarks you would retaliate as Well.
