We might not have the best of first impressions when it comes to the friendliness of the swedish people, but that is only to people we dont know. We are friendly to the ones we know and not to the people we dont know. I've met many people that thinks so. The swedes got that from a book written in 1933. within that book was a law called "Jantelagen" wich says that no one is supposed to think that they are better than anyone else. That was adopted in to the swedish peoples social norms somehow and resulted in us beign unfriendly to strangers. I dont know the entire history of "Jantelagen" or how it came to change into this but thats the reason of our unfriendlieness to unknown people.

So let me see if I got it right...Swedes read a book..Jantelagen or something... which said you should not think you are better than strangers... and Swedes decided to be unfriendly to strangers as an interpretation of that text? :))))

Or not, its poorly explained by marcus. You shouldn't think highly of yourself because you are noone special. That also applies to what we expect of others.
I don't like being in the way and most swedes where raised not to bother others. When I see someone on the street that I don't know I assume that they have more important things to do than to speak to me and therefore I wont speak to you.
Its fine if you don't understand.
