No Love But Plenty of Hate for US Health Insurance on Social Media
Report Finds Far More Hate Than Love for US Health Insurance on Social Media
NEW YORK, NY (September 29, 2011) -- Social media users were overwhelmingly negative about US health insurance on social media in the last 12 months, with Medicare providing the one ray of light in an otherwise dark picture, according to a new social media analytics report from Amplicate.
The report found that 70% of all opinions on social media about US health insurance (http://bit.ly/pzZAZM). were negative, with private health insurance companies, such as Aetna (AET) and Kaiser Permanente, incurring most of the hatred. Aetna was the most hated health insurance organisation over the last 12 months, with a measly 9% of comments expressing love for the health care giant.
Love for health insurance organisations reached its nadir in January 2011 when only 15% of comments about US health insurance were positive thanks to several health insurance firms' planning premium rate rises despite the economic downturn.
Medicare was the most loved and most talked about health insurance program in the US over the last 12 months. 43% of comments about the government program were positive thanks to a spike in positive opinions in May 2011, when the public reacted angrily to some Republicans' proposals to do away with the program that covers over 45m seniors in the US.
Amplicate's new report 'Public Opinion on Health Insurance in the US on Social Media' (http://bit.ly/nTtdPY) reveals that, although social media users were more positive than negative about Medicare in May, fans of Medicare were far less influential than the program's detractors. The potential audience for negative opinions on Medicare in May was almost twice the size of the potential audience for positive opinions on the government program.
