“alexander p” you are simply a rude and obsessed hater. I feel very sorry for you my friend. I do not know where you are from and I really do not care either, but for sure you are so much racist and not objective AT ALL. I had a very brief look on your several other comments of hatred to others on this site and I really cannot help you. It is obvious that you have a huge problem with Greece. I cannot understand all of your comments (no sense to translate your garbage comments), but you are obviously an obsessed hater.

As I said clearly in my few comments on this site, I am personally connected with several Greeks (though Iam not Greek) and I personally know Greece really very well. This is exactly the reason that I have the right to write my sincere opinion about Greeks and Greece. I have nothing to benefit from! No sense to get into further personal details. No sense to repeat my previous texts for Greece. It is very easy to find them in many online sources and books. It is a matter whether you want to find them, or not. And also whether you want to see the true or not! Greece is simply AMAZING. And the Greeks are wonderful people. If you do not believe this, then I feel sorry but I cannot help you!

GREECE IS THE SYMBOL OF EUROPE....and by the way, the name "Europe" is absolutely Greek, originating from Greek mythology !!

We -the people from other countries- all have some reasons to be proud for each of our countries (I am from Switzerland) but whether we like it or not, we have not such a lot and important issues to be proud of, like the Greeks are:

Greece is one of the oldest nation in Europe started 2500 years ago! Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, and the oldest city in Europe. Modern Greece traces its roots to the civilization of ancient Greece, which is officially considered the cradle of Western civilization.
As such it is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, political science, Western literature and historiography, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including both tragedy and comedy.
In short, our culture mimics Greece with architecture, art, science, math, literature, music, philosophy and mythology.
Greek has been spoken for more than 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest languages in Europe.
The Greek alphabet is the forerunner of the alphabet we use in English today. Over fifty thousand English words are derived from the Greek language.
The ancient Greeks are often called the inventors of mathematics because they were the first to make it a theoretical discipline (remember Greek mathematicians such as Pythagoras, Euclid, Archimedes, and Apollonius). Also, the Greek physician Hippocrates, who has been recognized as the "father of medicine", laid the foundation for a rational approach to medicine. Hippocrates introduced "The Hippocratic Oath" for physicians, physician assistants' and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice medicine ethically and honestly, and of course is still relevant and in use today.
Of course there are hundreds of other examples, all of which are written in hundreds or even thousands of books that prove "Greece is the cradle of Western civilization".

Literally, WE ARE ALL GREEKS, which means that the Greek heritage does primarily belong to the native Greeks, but also to all of us and as such we must show RESPECT and HONOR.

In addition there are several more reasons to love Greece:
Greeks are super smart, polite, generous, friendly, and of course super hospitable. No wonder that the word "philoxenia" is Greek !!
By visiting Greece you have the opportunity to have an excellent overview of (and if you want to explore in detail) the evolution of the mankind....So many ancient ruins of different periods...Really admirable !!
There are more than 250 days of sunshine in a year.
Greece boasts of having 7000 caves, which form 24000 Km of underground galleries.
No place in Greece is more than 85 miles from the sea.
Greece has the largest coastline in Europe and the 11th largest in the world with almost 1400 islands.
Greek islands are SOOOO BEAUTIFUL !! AMAZING !!
Greek food culture is unique and amazing, too !! Greek food today, with slight variation is about the same as it has been for over 2000 year.
Greece has one of the richest varieties of wildlife in Europe....and there are so many other reasons to love and visit Greece !!

Greece is an AMAZING PLACE that we should all respect.

Personally I and my friends will spend our holidays again in Greece this summer !!

Yes, I have heard the same rumors like those you heard Dimitri. Indeed the Greek universities will soon offer an advanced degree in corruption to a wider audience...I heard also that there are hundreds of offers primarily from German politicians, but also from Dutch, Austrian and Finn politicians and bankers that they would like to be Professors in these universities!! They deserve such a prestigious position anyway!! They know how to be corrupted without any average low IQ layman realizes what happens!! Turks will be of course always there for simple practical courses in corruption!!

Yesterday, I returned from my holidays in Greece and I can say to all the people here, that Greece is an amazing country with nice and generous people....just give yourself the opportunity to explore it!! Me and my friends had super nice holidays there! We also met several people from all around the world in Greece, and all of them were very happy to visit Greece....many of them told us that they might meet us again next year there!!

My lengthy and "rambling" story is nothing but a series of a very few facts that have been globally recognized and appreciated. There are thousands of facts more in literature. This is the reason that ancient Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization. Of course this has been globally recognized and appreciated. This is also shared by the rest of the literate and civilized world just because this is a fact.

Another thing that you have to distinguish in your mind is that ancient Greece is different that modern Greece. Don't confuse things because this is unfair and foolish. The recent financial crisis in modern Greece and in all the world, in general, is a whole different kettle of fish !! Not me, neither you are the experts to look for the reasons that have led there.

And please, don't write your comments on behalf of the rest of the world. Your comments represent your own small world that you are leaving in! People around the world have their own education, mind, and mentality; they don't need somebody like you to represent them!! If you had ever been in Greece, you would have observed that there are millions of people from all around the world (USA, central and south America, Asia, Australia and of course Europe) visiting Greece, and this number is almost twice the population of Greece itself. I am personally, too, part of the rest of the world!
and I cannot see that Greeks have an inflated self esteem. I have met a lot of Greeks and I really wonder where you have drawn this conclusion from!! I should also confirm that the Greeks blame primarily themselves, especially their corrupted politicians, and secondly and to a much much lesser extend, if not at all, officers from abroad! I speak on my own experience! Of course, it is quite reasonable -especially for the poor and less educated people- to react overwhelmingly when they see and hear humiliating and racist behaviors from abroad...any average man from any country would have done the same!

My own feeling is that you hate Greece because of the financial crisis. So, when the economy in Greece will be again fine, then you will love Greece again. Also, I guess that you hate Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland because their economies have crashed, too. I guess that you don't have poor friends -because they are evil- but you have only rich friends who are superior than the poor ones.

Dear Dimitri, I hope that at some point you will be objective and not racist. I wish you also to start loving people, especially those that they need your love and support, and stop hating them. Hatred will never never help you!! Just open your mind and see the truth !

I hate Greek civilization because Alexander the Great, Pericles, Themistocles, and others were Greeks, but Batman, Superman and Spiderman were not. Also, I hate Greek civilization because Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Hippocrates, Archimedes, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and so many others were Greeks, but Lady Gaga, Shakira and Britney Spears are nice chicks and not Greeks!

I hate Greece because I do not like Greek food (I've never tried Greek food but it doesn't matter), the Greeks are not hospitable (all the people visiting Greece say Greeks are super hospitable, but although I have never been in Greece I do not believe it). I hate Greece because even without it the sun would shine and the world would still turn. I hate Greece, because although it was almost fully destroyed by Nazis during WWII they managed to get up again and at some point they will might also ask for reparations for all the stolen money during the war.

I hate Greece, because they have managed to pay back the huge interest of the money they have borrowed, which means they have a lot of money! Thus, they should pay more and more !! Now !! I hate Greece because the average salary for a starting worker is extremely high; is up to 420-500 euros/month!! The pensions are extremely high, too; the average pension is 500-700 euros!! General unemployment is about 23%!! It should be much higher...I wish it reaches 100%.

I hate Greece, because Greeks did not invented the internet, computers (although the Greek "Antikythera mechanism" is an ancient analog computer, the first of this kind), the rocket, electricity, the washing machine, television, and most importantly the hairdryer. I hate Greece because they did not landed the first man on the moon and they will not land the first woman on the moon, either.

I hate Greece, because they are responsible for the World War II, the greenhouse effect, the ozone hole, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the extinction of 869 animal and plant species in tropical forests, the 99 nuclear accidents including the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters, the environmental pollution worldwide, the malaria, AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis and other fatal diseases that kill millions of people in Africa and Asia.

I hate Greece because it is the root of all evils. Without Greece the world would be perfect. The earth would be safe and peaceful again. Unemployment, poverty, corruption, and crime will be extinct words....

I hate Greece because I hate myself and I hate my life !!

First, “mathematics” itself is a Greek term and the contribution of Greeks in mathematics is EXTREMELY HUGE, especially in arithmetic, geometry, analysis (these terms are Greek, too!!), algebra, etc. Although Babylonians or Egyptians are mentioned before Greeks for using simple mathematics in daily life, the systematic study of mathematics in its own right began with the Ancient Greeks between 600 and 300 BC. The Greeks are responsible for making mathematics a scientific discipline. Greek mathematicians such as Pythagoras developed many of our basic mathematical theorems. Check some Greek mathematicians like Pythagoras, Aristotle, Plato, Thales of Miletus, Euclid, Anaxagoras, Hippocrates, Democritus (who is considered to be the "father of modern science"), Archimedes, etc. The list of Ancient Greek mathematicians is again sooooo long, that’s why I mentioned only a very few names that came to my mind. The ancient Greeks are often called the inventors of mathematics because they were the first to make it a theoretical discipline (remember Greek mathematicians such as Pythagoras, Euclid, Archimedes, and Apollonius). Also, the Greek physician Hippocrates, who has been recognized as the "father of medicine", laid the foundation for a rational approach to medicine. Hippocrates introduced "The Hippocratic Oath" for physicians, physician assistants' and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice medicine ethically and honestly, and of course is still relevant and in use today.
Of course there are hundreds of other examples, all of which are written in hundreds or even thousands of books that prove "Greece is the cradle of Western civilization".
Literally, WE ARE ALL GREEKS, which means that the Greek heritage does primarily belong to the native Greeks, but also to all of us and as such we must show RESPECT and HONOR.

In addition there are several more reasons to admire and visit Greece:
Greeks are super smart, polite, generous, friendly, and of course super hospitable. No wonder that the word "philoxenia" is Greek !!
There are more than 250days of sunshine in a year. Greece boasts of having 7000 caves, which form 24000 Km of underground galleries. No place in Greece is more than 85 miles from the sea. Greece has the largest coastline in Europe and the 11th largest in the world with almost 1400 islands. Greek islands are SOOOO BEAUTIFUL !! AMAZING !! Greek food culture is unique and amazing, too !! Greek food today, with slight variation is about the same as it has been for over 2000 year. Greece has one of the richest varieties of wildlife in Europe. And so many-many other things that everyone should explore...

Greece is an AMAZING PLACE that we should all respect and support.

I really feel sorry for you. There are several articles in international newspapers including of course those that you refer to (NYT, Guardian, etc), which support Greece and especially Greek people. It seems however that you remember only comments of hatred. Of course the articles of support that I could personally find were MUCH MUCH more than those of hatred and I doubt that you are objective !! This is pure propaganda. Could you please let us know the country of your origin ?? I could VERY easily guess....

I would agree, however in that there is probably a problem in the Greek tax system which allowed for tax evasion to a certain amount of people especially in the private sector. But this is not a Greek feature; Being a Swiss guy I know very well that almost all advanced countries hide their "tax-evaded" money in Swiss banks and other certain banks worldwide!! Also it seems that there were corrupted Governments, which however does not surprises me at all, too, since governmental corruption is more or less a common feature of all countries. Isn’t it?
It seems that “tax evasion” and “governmental corruption” are the major things to be responsible for most of criticism not only from other countries in Europe but mostly from the Greeks themselves. Nowadays the Greeks have “demonstrated” these problems and struggle to solve the “tax evasion” problem and do away with corrupted governments. It is generally accepted that they have already succeeded in their first steps in this direction, although of course, they need much more time is needed since such big changes cannot be applied in a few days or months. For me, this is a great opportunity for Greece to become even better and fair with its citizens and its partners in Europe. Like every other country, Greece needs our support when they need it. Personally I and some friends are going again in Greece for our 15 days holidays this summer.

I feel also obliged to say –based on a brief research– that many things you hear about Greece just aren’t true. The Greeks aren’t lazy —on the contrary, they work longer hours than almost anyone else in Europe, and much longer hours than the Germans in particular. Nor does Greece have a runaway welfare state, as conservatives like to claim; social expenditure as a percentage of G.D.P., the standard measure of the size of the welfare state, is substantially lower in Greece than in, say, Sweden or Germany, countries that have so far weathered the European crisis pretty well.

Moreover, while Greece receives billions of euros in emergency assistance from the lenders overseeing its bailout, almost none of the money is going to the Greek government to pay for vital public services. Instead, it is flowing directly back into the troika’s pockets. The European bailout that was supposed to help Greece is mainly servicing only the interest on the country’s debt — while the Greek economy continues to struggle.
The origins of this crisis lie farther north, in Brussels, Frankfurt and Berlin, where officials created a deeply — perhaps fatally — flawed monetary system, and the solution to the crisis, if there is one, will have to come from the same places. Greece (and similarly Italy, Spain and Portugal) is the victim of Euro.

And here are only a few more things to consider before expressing your hatred for Greece:
Greece is one of the oldest nation in Europe started 2500 years ago! Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, and the oldest city in Europe. Modern Greece traces its roots to the civilization of ancient Greece, which is officially considered the cradle of Western civilization. As such it is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, political science, Western literature and historiography, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including both tragedy and comedy.
In short, our culture mimics Greece with architecture, art, science, math, literature, music, philosophy and mythology.

Are you sure ?? Have you ever experienced something like this in your personal life ?? Have you ever met any Greek ?? Have you ever been in Greece ?? I feel sorry, but I honestly doubt on whether what you say is true or you really believe it...maybe your nationalist blood does not let you think more than a few seconds before you express your hatress for a nice, honest, trustful and hard-working nation.

Greeks are wonderful people !! Greeks are honest, hard-working and they have high moral values. I really wonder who says that Greeks are lazy and cheating ?? Do you know any single example ?? Have you ever been in Greece ?? I am from Switzerland and I have been in Greece a few times....I have also met some Greeks personally here in Switzerland and around the world and I feel obliged to stress that GREEKS ARE SUPER NICE and SUPER HARD-WORKING PERSONS.....From my own experience whoever says the opposite is either blind or has never met any Greek and never been in Greece....There is a huge PROPAGANDA FOR GREECE that honestly does not deserve to these wonderful people...I would suggest all the "nationalists" that comment in a so arrogant and unfair manner for Greece, to think first and then express their opinion...do not read your "junk" newspapers and please OPEN YOUR EYES....We all own to Greece for science, arts, culture, civilization, etc.... It is all about the Greeks politicians that failed on their policy....and of course many other "friends" from Europe (i.e. Germany) helped them to fail in a professional way....it is very sad that you do not see this...And please read some history before any comment. Anyway, what I see here is that some people hate Greece with no severe reason but maybe because they would like to be Greeks, or leaving in Greece and not in their depressing country.
